We’re always looking for inspiration and trends—in both expected and unexpected places. As part of this ongoing quest, the whole office hopped the ferry to Randall’s Island this spring to soak up some visual culture at Frieze New York.
We spent the day taking in works by hundreds of artists with an eye toward trends that might filter into retail. (And we might have indulged in some insane pizza at Roberta’s to keep our energy up.) The number one thing that caught my eye: big reflective surfaces on a whole lot of art.
Anyone who follows the home and fashion categories knows that mirrors and other shimmery surfaces have been big for the past few years. But based on the artwork at Frieze, I think we’ll see reflective surfaces go even bigger and bolder at retail in 2014.
Word meets image in a crackled reflective wall sculpture. A mini version would make the perfect necklace at ABC Home.
This smooth brain-like sculpture could easily become a stool or table base.
Hundred of mirrored hexagons shimmered in mobile-like sculpture. This exploding effect would make a fabulous chandelier.
I love how the one on the left looks like it was scratched out with a giant’s lipstick. Fairytale + cosmetic = fashion.
Layers of saturated colors folded around a reflective surface might inspire a red-carpet-worthy dress.
The next step for mirrored home accessories? The bigger and bolder, the better.
This already packs the same kind of sophisticated but cheeky punch as home brands like Alessi.
Small shimmery home accessories are everywhere from Target to ABC Carpet & Home. We expect them to grow in size, shape and whimsy, not unlike this joyous little gem.
Have you wandered through any art fairs or galleries lately? What trends did you notice?
